Katharine Kent (left) with Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw
Katharine, Duchess of Kent officially opened the conservatoire on 28 June 1973 and her deep commitment to music education led her to serve as inaugural President of the RNCM. She was named a Companion in 1976 and, in 2013, she was guest of honour at the RNCM’s 40th anniversary concert where she was confirmed as Emeritus President of the College by our Principal, Professor Linda Merrick CBE.
The RNCM was not the only beneficiary of her love of music. She served as a primary school music teacher in Hull for several years and, in 2004, founded her own music charity, Future Talent, which aimed to give every child an equal opportunity to excel in music. She also served as a Trustee of the National Foundation for Youth Music (London) and was an ambassador for Aldeburgh Productions in Suffolk.
Professor Merrick said: ‘The RNCM was saddened to hear of the death of Katharine Kent, our first and longest serving president. A true advocate for music education, Katherine played an integral part in supporting and promoting our work during her 35-year tenure and will remain an important part of our history for many years to come. Our thoughts are with her family at this sad time.’
